As I write this post, the Outer Banks of North Carolina are being pummeled by Hurricane Irene. All those beautiful places we visited as a family just a few short weeks ago are in danger of being damaged or swept away. It is likely that the landscape will shift and change due to this storm, but the magical beauty that is spiritually sown into the landscape won’t change.
As a traveler, I’ve been to many places. I live very close to beautiful Atlantic beaches and feel most at home with a blue horizon in my view. But the beaches – Hatteras and Nags Head – the sunsets on Pamlico Sound, the lighthouses, the wild national seashore, the blue skies speckled kites, all these OBX elements are charged with a common charism that draws me to return … and leaves me with a quiet comfort when I remember times spent there.
We took the r-pod to the Hatteras KOA. We were fortunate enough to get site 319 in the far corner on the Oceanside. We were a few yards from the dune and could hear the ocean waves the all during our stay … throughout the night, while we ate, while we sat to chat with our adorable grandchildren and daughter-in-love, Amber. The kids flew kites at Jockey’s Ridge. No one should miss the kite flying opportunity at the Outer Banks. That would be like missing the ponies at Assateague. We ate at Sooey’s just across from Jockey’s Ridge and bought the appropriate “Life is Good” mugs, shirts, etc.
But most of our time was spent right at the campsite spending intermittent times at the beach. What magical place.
